Bin Laden to blame for Libya’s revolt: Gaddafi
The Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has given an extraordinary interview by phone with Libyan state television blaming the revolt against his rule on al Qaeda’s Osama bin Laden. Bin Laden, he said, was the real criminal. Gaddafi said he himself had only moral authority in Libya and likened himself to Britain’s Queen Elizabeth. He offered his condolences to those who had died in the fighting uprising. And he called on people in Zawiyah 50 kilometres from the capital Tripoli to disarm the protesters, who he said had been taking hallucinogenic drugs. Copyright © 2011 euronews

Yemen
President Ali Abdullah Saleh has ruled what is the Arab world’s poorest nation for 32 years. Crowds began taking to the streets on February 10 to call for him to step down immediately. He has refused to do that although he did say he will not be in office after the end of this term in 2013. Neither, he said, would he transfer power to his son. But that, and pledges of reforms, has not been enough. Protests that have so far killed at least 12 people continue, as many Yemenis have heard Saleh make promises before without keeping to them. On Tuesday, students staging a sit in outside Sanaa University set fire to a car they claim belonged to Saleh loyalists and in which they found weapons. Neither Saleh nor his opponents seem ready to budge. Libyan air strikes may be imminent
We may be just hours away from air strikes on Colonel Gaddafi’s forces in Libya. Sources close to the emergency summit in Paris, which has brought together Britain, France, Canada, the USA, several European leaders, members of the Arab League and an African Union representative, say the air strikes could begin as early as 4pm this afternoon. Although German leader Angela Merkel has ruled out her country’s participation in military action she is at the summit, which has been called by French President Nicolas Sarkozy. In anticipation of air strikes Gaddafi appears to have gone back on his word to order a ceasefire on Friday, and has bombarded Benghazi, sending in ground forces. In the open desert, these are easy targets, but air power will be hard to apply if street fighting is taking place. Copyright © 2011 euronews

Ivory Coast vows banks will open
Ivory Coast says it will re-open branches of two major French banks on Monday. The West African country’s move to take control of French and American banks largely froze their activities this week. Many of the major banks have already evacuated senior staff, disabling operations. With serious liquidity problems, the government of disputed leader Laurent Gbagbo said it was nationalising them to keep the economy functioning. The two main targets were France’s BNP Paribas and Societe Generale. Analysts believe Abidjan chose them because a lot of civil servants and soldiers hold accounts there. Ivory Coast has been in crisis since the November 28 presidential elections. Most of the international community recognised that Gbagbo’s main rival Alassane Ouattara won but Gbagbo refuses to quit, in spite of strong domestic and foreign pressure. Economic sanctions include an embargo by the European Union on Ivory Coast’s two main ports. Copyright © 2011 euronews

‘Food shortages’ as North Korea celebrates leader’s birthday
There have been protests in the South Korean capital Seoul to coincide with the 69th birthday of the North’s leader Kim Jong-Il. Tension has mounted between the two neighbours over the past couple of years. North Korea has become increasingly hostile, conducting missile tests and staging military attacks. As a group of southern tourists gazed across the border in curiosity, one visitor asked whether it right for the North to celebrate its leader’s birthday while most North Koreans were starving. “He’d better feed his people first, and then he can enjoy his birthday. Kim Jong-Il should step down as soon as possible for his people,” the tourist said. Although Pyongyang has seen the usual birthday commemorations, defectors in Seoul say festivities in the North have been scaled down this year because of a chronic food shortage. Whereas the authorities usually distribute 10 days’ worth of rations, some areas have reportedly received no supplies. South Korean officials say one of the leader’s sons, Kim Jong-chol, was spotted recently at an Eric Clapton concert in Singapore. Meanwhile back home his youngest son, heir apparent Kim Jong-un, continues to appear in public with his father. Copyright © 2011 euronews
